The 2015 Premiere at Leicester Square
The premiere took place at Vue Leicester Square on January 25, 2015. The event used a green carpet instead of the usual red carpet.
ITV reported the next day that Ed Sheeran was among those attending the premiere. It also named Eliza Doolittle and Rizzle Kicks, who were linked to the film’s soundtrack. A Getty photo from the night shows Sheeran with Nick Park.
The film later received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature and a BAFTA nomination for Animated Film, both in 2016.
How Sean Connolly Almost Met Ed Sheeran
According to Connolly’s blog, he went to the premiere with his wife, the actress Bella Hamblin, and their daughter Erin. Erin was a fan of Ed Sheeran. During the screening, none of them knew he was close by.
Afterwards, the family learned that Sheeran had been sitting only a couple of rows away. That detail comes from Connolly himself. No seating plan or photo backs it up, so it is best read as his version of the night.
For a family with an Ed Sheeran fan, it was a frustrating thing to discover. They had shared a room with him for the length of a film and never knew it.
What Connolly’s Blog Says
Connolly wrote two posts on January 26, 2015, the day after the premiere. One describes the green-carpet event. The other covers the reception at the Criterion Restaurant in Piccadilly, where he was with fellow voice actor Kate Harbour.
In that second post, he said he had tried to contact Sheeran through Twitter. He pointed out how many followers Sheeran had. Then he invited Sheeran to get in touch if he happened to see the post.
It was a hopeful, slightly cheeky move. It is the latest part of the story documented in the sources reviewed. No public source shows whether Sheeran ever saw the post or replied.
